Sand Sculpting in Coverack

GREAT FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY!

Visiting the seaside first began in the 17th century when doctors recommended sea bathing and drinking the sea water to combat many kinds of medical ailments. The first Sand Castle however, built to try and stop the tide coming in on a sandy beach by building an embankment of sand or a tower of sand with a moat around it, probably dates from the 19th century. Sand castle building competitions were firmly established in popular resorts by the end of the century with hundreds of children (and their parents!) building castles with forts, bridges and lighthouses.

How far we have come from these humble beginnings. Today sand sculptures have become an established art form with professional sand sculptors

offering their services to launch corporate events and host team building exercises.

So, back to reality.

Here in Coverack Sand Castle and Sand Sculpture competitions have been taking place in the summer for many years. So popular now that two or three events are held annually. In teams, enthusiastic sculptors are challenged to build the best structure in a variety of categories, with judging taking place just ahead of the incoming tide!

The Magic Formula, yes there is science to sand sculpting!

The Sand – Don’t let the sand dry out and don’t water it so much it’s a mushy heap.

The Location – Not too close to the water or the tide will take it out before you’ve finished.

The Tools – A bucket and spade may not be enough these days, your competitors will use trowels, knives, watering cans, straws, scoops and more.

Decoration – Think big! Pebbles, shells, driftwood, seaweed and feathers will all enhance your sculpture to the next level.

But don’t forget the most important rule – Enjoy Yourself!

And if you’ve never sculpted before, here’s a handy video to prepare you for your next stay at Little Trevothan Camping and Caravan Park!
